External Snapping Hip/IT Band

An external snapping hip is characterized by a palpable or audible snap during hip movement that may be associated with pain. It commonly occurs in athletes or young adults. Pain may be associated with bursitis or tendinosis and exacerbated when the hip is externally rotated or abducted.

A diagnosis is usually made by physical examination which includes provocative testing. An X-ray of the pelvis may also be ordered. An external snapping hip can usually be treated conservatively with rest, stretching, and anti-inflammatory medication. In some cases, surgical treatment such as IT band release, debridement, and labral repair may be suggested.
