Lisfranc Sprain

A Lisfranc ligament is tough band of tissue located in the midfoot region. It connects the long bones present behind the toes to the bones of the arch of the foot. An injury to the midfoot region either by direct trauma or by twisting of the foot can result in a Lisfranc sprain causing instability, pain, swelling, and inability to bear weight on the foot. X-rays and other imaging studies may be required to accurately diagnose the condition. Nonsurgical treatments include oral pain medication, immobilization, elevation of the foot and physical therapy. In severe cases where fracture of bone has occurred, surgical treatment may be necessary.
