Massive Retracted Rotator Cuff Tear
What are Massive Retracted Rotator Cuff Tears?
Massive retracted rotator cuff tears are characterized by the complete tearing of at least 2 rotator cuff tendons such that they no longer attached to the bone.
Causes of Massive Retracted Rotator Cuff Tears
They may be caused by:
- Traumatic injuries
- Falls
- Accidents
- Age related wear and tear
Symptoms of Massive Retracted Rotator Cuff Tears
Common symptoms include:
- A dull, aching pain
- Weakness in the arm and shoulder
- Limited range of motion of the shoulder
- Muscle spasm
- Trouble sleeping at night due to shoulder pain
Treatment of Massive Retracted Rotator Cuff Tears
Surgical treatment is usually recommended for massive retracted rotator cuff tears. The torn tendon will be reattached to the bone using a graft. The procedure is called superior capsular reconstruction.
Postsurgical Recovery after Massive Retracted Rotator Cuff Tears
After surgery, the shoulder will be immobilized for a specific period to allow for proper healing. Following this period, physical therapy rehabilitation will be provided to improve shoulder strength and range of motion.
