Peroneus Tendon Strain

Peroneus tendon strain is a type of foot and ankle injury caused due to excessive stretching or tearing of the peroneal tendon, which lies in the foot behind the outer ankle bone. It may be acute - caused suddenly or chronic - progressing over a long period of time. There are three types of peroneus tendon strains:

  • Tears: Refers to the excessive stretching or wearing of the tendon due to trauma, friction or daily activities. Common symptoms include pain, swelling and frailty or instability in the ankle and foot.
  • Tendonitis: It refers to the inflammation of the tendon. Characterized by pain, inflammation, redness and warmth in the affected area.
  • Subluxation: It occurs when the tendon slips out of its normal position due to an injury or ageing. Common symptoms include frailty, instability and snapping pain in the ankle.

Anti-inflammatory pain relief medications, physiotherapy, braces and immobilization are some of the common approaches used to treat peroneus tendon strain.
