Plantar Fascia Rupture

The plantar fascia refers to the dense connective tissue located on the bottom of the foot. It extends from the heel bone till the tip of the toe bone. The plantar fascia ruptures with repeated wear and tear or an injury to the foot. It leads to pricking pain in the feet, especially in the heel region, which worsens on exhaustion or strain to the feet. Athletes, obese people and people who spend long hour standing are at an increased risk of developing plantar fascia rupture. X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used in routine diagnosis. Plantar fascia rupture may be treated by a foot and ankle specialist. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory pain relief medications, physiotherapy, shoe arch supports and orthotics. Surgery may be advised if you do not get relief from the conventional therapies.
